The FIELD trial-Fenofibrate
Intervention and Event Lowering in Diabetes-aimed to determine
whether treatment with fenofibrate, a potent modifier of blood
lipid levels, would reduce the risk of fatal coronary heart disease
in people with type 2 diabetes.
FIELD was a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of prevention of coronary heart disease in people with type 2 diabetes. The trial was conducted in Australia, New Zealand and Finland.The trial began recruiting patients in early 1998, and randomly assigned the last of its 9795 participants in November 2000. Its five-year follow-up was completed during 2005. The results were reported in The Lancet in November 2005, and substudy analysis is continuing.
Main eligibility criteria:
type 2 diabetes mellitus with onset
after the age of 35 years
men and women aged 50-75 years of
age
average total cholesterol 3.0-6.5
mmol/L
triglycerides/high-density cholesterol
ratio of 4.0 or higher, or triglycerides over 1.0 mmol/L
FIELD was internationally
managed by the CTC. The international Management Committee has representatives
from the three participating countries-Australia, New Zealand
and Finland—and the sponsor, the French pharmaceutical company, Fournier Pharma.
