Statin therapy reduces vascular events in 'low-risk' people
Professor Anthony Keech, Dr Jordan Fulcher and Professor John
Simes have questioned whether more people should be eligible for
lipid-lowering therapy. Their discourse, published in an editorial
in the Medical Journal of
Australia, draws on a recent meta-analysis of evidence by the
Cholesterol Treatment Trialists' Collaboration, of which Professors
Keech and Simes are members.
The study, published in The Lancet, analysed data from 170,000
patients with or without cardiovascular disease, and showed that
treatment with statins resulted in significant reductions in
vascular events, such as strokes and heart attacks, in patients
with no history of vascular disease.
