Fighting obesity from conception- a randomised trial

 

Plain Language Summary:    The aim of the study is to evaluate whether multidisciplinary antenatal care of pregnant women who are obese on body mass index, have improved pregnancy outcomes, compared to women receiving usual care. The study is a randomised trial. The multidisciplinary care involves care by an obstetric doctor, dietary advisor, and clinical psychologist.

Date trial opened to accrual:    February 2005

 

Expected accrual period:         February 2005 to May 2006

 

Trial Objective:

1. Multidisciplinary antenatal care reduces pooled maternal and newborn morbidity in overweight and obese women.

2. Improves attitudes to infant feeding.
If follow-up funding granted:
3. Improves breastfeeding rates
4. Reduces maternal BMI at 6 and 12 months
5. Improvement in maternal mood
