Evaluation of a Decision Aid for women with a breech-presenting baby

Plain Language Summary:      To evaluate the effectiveness of a Decision Aid (DA) that presents information on the management options for women with a breech-presenting baby at term. The DA incorporates an audiotape/CD and workbook and provides information on the options and outcomes (external cephalic version and/or planned caesarean section) based on the best available evidence. The DA will be evaluated in a randomised controlled trial that compares women who receive the DA, in addition to usual care versus those women who receive usual care only (where usual care involves usual antenatal care provider counselling at 37 weeks gestation). Women with a single breech-presenting baby at greater than 34 weeks gestation and who are clinically eligible for ECV will be eligible for the trial. We will assess the impact on women's satisfaction with decision making, knowledge, anxiety and pregnancy outcomes. The DA is non-directive in that it is not intended to steer women towards any one option, but rather support her decision-making which is informed and consistent with personal values and acted on.
