PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT PT0427 TIC Transition from Incubator to Open Cot: early versus late. A randomised, controlled trial
Plain Language Summary: One of the key criteriafor discharging preterm infants from nurseries is their ability to maintain temperature once transferred from an incubator to an open cot. This practice varies widely between neonatal units. The scientific evidence of when and at what weight this should occur is also limited. The current practice is to transfer infants from incubators to open cots early or late on the outcomes of weight gain and temperature control.
Trial status: Opened to accrual
Date trial open to accrual: June 2003
Expected accrual period: 24 months
Trial Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate whether differences exist in temperature stability and weight gain between 1600 gram and 1800 gram infants nursed in open cots. This study will test the following hypotheses: 1. The average daily weight gain for infants transferred in an open cot at 1600 grams will not be significantly less than those infants transferred to an open cot at 1800 grams. 2. Temperature stability for those infants transferred to an open cot at 16000 grams will not be significantly less than those infants transferred to an open cot at 1800 grams. 3. The average time to discharge from hospital for infants transferred to an open cot at 1600 grams will not be greater than those infants transferred to an open cot at 1800 grams.
