PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT PT0395 The effect of full body exposure compared to partial body exposure in preterm infants with physiological jaundice receiving phototherapy.
Plain Language Summary: This study aims of evaluate the practice of nursing infants naked compared to nursing them with disposable nappies whilst receiving phototherapy by overhead white lights. This study will assess whether the current standard practice of nursing infants naked beneath phototherapy lights has an effect on SBR (serum bilirubin) levels and duration of phototherapy and, to evaluate the effect on infant behaviour, parental stress and utilisation of nursing time. A conclusive outcome will provide clinically useful evidence on which to base practice for nursing infants naked or with nappies while receiving phototherapy.
Trial status: Follow-up complete
Date of accrual completion: 25 March 2000
Trial Objective:
To assess whether the practice of nursing infants with disposable nappies covering 1/3 of their body torso while receiving overhead white-light phototherapy alters (serum bilirubin) SBR levels - time spent receiving phototherapy - affects infant behaviour - affects parental stress.
Type of administration: Single centre
