PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT PT0394 STOMP St George Outreach Maternity Project: A randomised controlled trial of a community-based model of maternity care
Plain Language Summary: The St George Outreach Maternity Project (STOMP) was an innovative model of midwifery care incorporating continuity of care throughout the antenatal, intrapartum and postpartum period. Hospital salaried midwives and obstetricians provided antenatal care from community-based settings. Postnatal care was provided in hospital and in the community. A randomised controlled trial was conducted in 12089 women. Women who were allocated to the STOMP model of care perceived that they had a higher 'quality' of antenatal care compared with women who had standard care. STOMP women also had a lower caesarean section rate. The cost of providing care was lower in the STOMP group. Trial status: Follow-up complete
Date of accrual completion: May 1997
Trial Objective: To test whether a new community-based model of continuity of care provided by midwives and obstetricians improved maternal clinical outcomes, in particular a reduce caesarean section rate.
Type of administration: Single centre
