PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT PT0390
Prevention of low systemic blood flow and brain injury in very preterm babies using Milrinone.
Plain Language Summary: Low blood flow to the body and brain is common in the first 24 hours after preterm birth. This is significantly related to brain haemorrhage and abnormal development at 3 years of age. Clinical markers of low flow are inaccurate and the drugs currently used to improve blood flow don't work in about 40% of babies. This trial will examine a new preventative approach to this low blood flow using a drug that has been successfully used in newborns after heart operations, Milrinone. The aim will be to prevent low blood flow and ultimately brain injury in preterm babies.
Trial status: Open to accrual
Date of opened to accrual: 1/03/2002
Trial Objective: To demonstrate the safety and efficacy of Milrinone given to very preterm infants at risk of low systemic blood flow.
Type of administration: Multi-centre National
Principal Investigator/s: Dr Nick Evans
Contact Person/s: To be advised
