Premature Infants In Need of Transfusion (PINT study)

Plain Language Summary:

Infants less than one kilogram require blood transfusion during stay in hospital. Unfortunately there is no scientific evidence to guide transfusion practice. The aim of this study is to determine whether a liberal transfusion policy, that is, keeping the hemoglobin high, or a restrictive policy, where transfusion is less frequent thus allowing the Hb to fall to lower levels, is safer.
The main outcomes of interest are the proportion of infants discharged home without severe morbidity, (severe morbidity defined as chronic lung disease requiring oxygen, periventricular leukomalacia/ventriculomegaly, or severe retinopathy of prematurity), growth in weight and head circumference, duration of assisted ventilation, and length of hospital stay until discharge home.
