 A postnatal support program and its effect on breastfeeding duration

 

Plain Language Summary:     A randomised controlled trial of an innovative postnatal support program for breastfeeding mothers will be tested or its effect on duration of breastfeeding to six months postpartum. The aim is to increase the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding at six months from 30% to 50%. The economic value of such a program will also be evaluated. The package will consist of in-hospital learning and support, home visiting and telephone contact for six weeks following discharge from midwifery care. Women and infants who take part in this program will be compared with those who receive only routine care.

Trial Objectives:                   

1. To develop and test postnatal support program for its ability to increase the number of infants being breastfed at six months postnatal age.
2. To test a postnatal support program for its impact on maternal psychological well-being.
3. To assess the cost effectiveness of a postnatal support program when compared to routine postnatal care.
