PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT

PT0366

Randomised double cross over study of assisted control ventilation (A/C) versus intermittent ventilation (IMV) in preterm babies weaning off ventilation

Plain Language Summary:      A randomised double cross-over study of assisted control ventilation (A/C) versus intermittent ventilation (IMV) on babies weaning off ventilation to compare the effect on ventilation parameters, transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide and oxygen saturation. The babies were studied for 30 minutes on one mode, changed to alternative mode of ventilation for 30 minutes, repeated. Apart from the ventilator mode, all other parameters remained unchanged during each study. Apart from the increase mean airway pressure on A/C mode which was highly significant, no other ventilator parameters, transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide and oxygen saturation were significantly different during the 30 minutes on each mode of ventilation.

Trial status:                         Open to accrual

Date trial opened to accrual:    April 1999

Trial Objective:

To compare AC and IMV and measure the effects on ventilation parameters transcutaneous oxygen and carbon dioxide and oxygen saturation levels.
