PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT

VAMP Trial

Evaluation of the VAMP (Venous/Arterial Blood Management Protection) closed method of blood sampling from arterial umbilical catheters in very low birth-weight neonates.

Plain Language Summary:      Very low birth-weight infants (those born <1500grams) are at high risk of infection after birth. Identification of ways to reduce the risk is a high priority in newborn care. The VAMP trial will test whether a closed method of umbilical arterial blood sampling will reduce the risk of required infection.

Trial status:                         Follow up complete

Date of accrual completion:    August 2002

Trial Objective:

This trial aims to test the effects of a closed system of umbilical arterial blood sampling compared to a standard open technique in terms of neonatal sepsis and costs.

Type of administration:        Single centre
