PERINATAL TRIALS REPORT PT0347 Expulsion of a retained placenta using acupuncture: a randomised controlled trial.
Plain Language Summary: A randomised trial is being conducted to determine whether acupuncture is an affective method to expel the placenta. Women will be randomly allocated into either an acupuncture group or a sham acupuncture group. The intervention will last 20 minutes, 30 minutes after the end of 2nd stage labour. If the placenta has not been expelled during this time the intervention will be considered unsuccessful and routine care will continue after this time.

Date closed to accrual: June 2003
Trial Objective: To determine if acupuncture is an effective method to expel the placenta; to reduce morbidity associated with this complication during the third stage of labour; and is an acceptable method for women.
